Ron Ron got his first taste of radio music as a child on rare trips to the local Thrifty drug store lunch counter in rural southern California where the jukebox played hits like Running Bear, The Battle of New Orleans, and Wolverton Mountain. He got his first transistor radio at the age of 10 and listened to El Cajon’s KCBQ on am 1170 until the battery would die. He pulled weeds for his grandmother and received his pay in the form of a new 9 volt battery. The music spoke to him then and it still does today. He bounced from school to school eventually ending up at Cal Farley’s Boys’ Ranch in Texas where he attend high school and graduated with the “Class of 1967.” Ron entered the Army at the age of 18 and spent the next 24 years there. He spent much of his time overseas in Vietnam, Europe, Panama, and Korea. With the help of the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service was able to keep in touch with music and even saw a number of USO shows with singers like Connie Stevens, Johnny Cash, and Buck Owens. When not overseas, Ron saw duty in California, Georgia, Colorado, Hawaii, Arizona, Virginia, and Illinois. He also spent 5 years on the United States Army Exhibit team where he developed audience communication skills and storytelling techniques. After the Army, Ron became a high school JROTC instructor in Arkansas, eventually moving to Louisiana where he continues to help “motivate young people to be better citizens,” at the 11 high schools of his parish school board. The idea of Rock Remembered™ came during a drive back from Texas after his 40th high school reunion. (See Origins of Rock Remembered.)
